MIDI Composition

MIDI composition takes advantage of the MIDI interface to allow musical data files to be shared among various electronic instruments by using a standard list of commands and parameters known as General MIDI (GM). (Wiki)

The data is saved as instructions or direction, and because of this the files tend to be very small, and can be loaded into various software and hardware and further manipulated.

To me MIDI Composition is a lot like paint by numbers, or at the very least a coloring book. The lines are already set for you, you just spice up the rest.
